Chameleon Safaris

3-Day Sossusvlei Express

Starting in Swakopmund and ending in Windhoek

For those clients with limited time available, this short safari is the perfect solution, departing around lunchtime on Friday from SWAKOPMUND and returning mid-afternoon on Sunday to Windhoek. Our base is in the Sesriem area with accommodation in permanent adobe style tents with en suite facilities or twin rooms and stunning views across the mountains and desert. An excellent way to experience the amazing sand dune sea of the Namib and Sossusvlei region on this 3 day trip.

Day 1 – FRIDAY DESERT CAMP, NEAR SESRIEM We will be picked up from our guesthouse/hotel in Swakopmund at 11:15, (wintertime 10h15) for a brief predeparture talk. The vehicle will travel via the Kuiseb Canyon and Ghaub Pass before stopping at the Tropic of Capricorn for photos and then on to Solitaire to refuel. Our guide will provide a light lunch on board. Arrival at camp is late afternoon and we will have time for a short walk to view the beautiful sunset over the Naukluft Mountains. Overnight accommodation is in permanent “adobe” style tents with en-suite bathroom. Dinner is prepared over the campfire by our guide. (L,D)

Day 2 – SATURDAY DESERT CAMP, NEAR SESRIEM We depart at dawn from camp to arrive at the park gate for sunrise. We drive down an ancient river bed surrounded by towering dunes to the 2×4 parking (around 55kms) and take a 4×4 shuttle into the Sossusvlei area to appreciate the beauty of this place in early morning light and enjoy the peace and tranquility of the region. We explore this unique area on foot before heading into Dead Vlei with its large expanse of bleached cracked clay and skeletal camel thorn trees, contrasting with a backdrop of huge dunes with their ever-changing colours before taking the 4×4 shuttle back to our vehicle. As we drive back to our accommodation we will stop at the famous Dune 45 and climb this dune if we wish or just wander around the base. We return to Sesriem and visit the nearby Sesriem Canyon, one of the few permanent water sources before arriving back at our lodge late afternoon to watch the sunset over this spectacular desert. Overnight in twin share rooms or permanent tents with en-suite bathrooms. Dinner prepared by our guide. (BLD)

Day 3 – SUNDAY WINDHOEK Early morning breakfast before heading to Solitaire Guest Farm where we join a biologist to track wild cheetahs at the N/a’ankuse Namib Conservation Centre. We return to Windhoek via Bullsport and Rehoboth. We arrive mid-afternoon and will be dropped at our accommodation. 2-Day Sossusvlei Weekender

Departs Saturdays from Windhoek

For those people stuck in town over the weekend this is the perfect getaway, a short and focused tour visiting the towering sand dunes of Sossusvlei, the depths of Sesriem Canyon and the beautiful sunsets from Elim’s Dune.

Day 1 Sesriem

Departure from Chameleon Backpackers and Guesthouse at 07h00 sharp for our journey to Sesriem via Gamsberg Pass and Solitaire aiming to arrive in the desert by 13h00. Luxury Lodge clients will be dropped at Sossus Dune Lodge for lunch and can relax prior to their afternoon excursion to Elim’s Dune (we will say goodbye to our lodge clients here and only see them tomorrow when they re-join us for lunch and the drive back to Windhoek). For the camping clients we set up camp and have lunch before visiting the Sesriem Canyon and then you will be dropped at Elim’s Dune for sunset and a refreshing 30 minute hike back to camp, where your driver is preparing your evening meal over the campfire and we recommend an early night. Overnight in tents on twin share basis or at Sossus Dune Lodge in luxury bungalows with en-suite facilities. Both Sesriem Camp and Sossus Dune Lodge have a bar, restaurant and swimming pool. (L,D) Approx 340kms

Day 2 Windhoek

For our camping clients we rise very early this morning to break camp and head into the dune area 1 hour prior to sunrise for the 45km journey to Dune 45, here we give you time to climb the dune and witness the beautiful changing colours of the sand dunes while the sun rises. By the time you return to the vehicle your driver will have prepared a basic continental breakfast to replenish your energy levels for the walk into Dead Vlei and to climb the Sossusvlei dunes. The 4×4 transfer is required to allow maximum time to explore Dead Vlei and the pans of Sossusvlei. Our lodge based clients will join their early morning excursion to Sossusvlei with an experienced guide from Sossus Dune Lodge and explore the dunes from the comfort of a 4×4 vehicle (please note that the excursion in Dead Vlei is still on foot) before returning to the Chameleon safari vehicle for lunch and the long trek back to Windhoek. The return journey takes you via the Naukluft Mountains and Rehoboth to arrive back in Windhoek late afternoon, where you will be dropped off at your accommodation establishment. (B,L) Approx 420kms.

This is a highly focused safari covering approx 800 km over 2 days, therefore many hours are spent in the vehicle travelling to and from our destination. Therefore we DO NOT recommend this tour for those with more time to explore this fascinating and unique area or are liable to feel disappointed due to the short nature of this safari, alternatively please consider our 3 day Sossusvlei Express departing from Swakopmund every Friday or our 4 day Swakopmund + Sossusvlei Adventure every Thursday from Windhoek.
