The Bowser/Halliwell lab looks forward to upcoming summer opportunities, including the return of the Rocky Mountain Sustainability and Science Network (RMSSN), the pilot year of work on National Park Service Pollinator Inventories (Yosemite, Colorado National Monument, Zion, Crater Lake, and more), and the continuation of research in Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Park.

We said our sad goodbyes to Gillian’s (mom’s) dog, Kodiak/King Chunk earlier this week. Kodiak was 17 and a NYC transplant due to COVID-19 pet restrictions. He found his love of the outdoors, his voice, and Fort Collins and all its good people. Sending hugs to Gillian’s family and we hope Kodiak is enjoying all the good smells up above.

Gillian and Jacob (MS student) ESS are heading to the COP in Glasgow, Scotland with the YEAH network! They will meet up with Pollinator Hotshot alumni, Daniel Dominguez, who is currently a Marshall Scholar at the University of Glasgow! Students participating in the YEAH Network directly increase public scientific literacy by sharing their research at the annual COP meetings of the United Nations. Student participants of the YEAH Network are trained to apply their learning into multitudinous career paths, whether it be scientific research, economics, business, academia, health fields, policy, or other related fields.

The Bowser lab warmly welcomes Dr. Philip Halliwell as our new research scientist! Phil received his PhD in Sustainability Education from Prescott College in 2019. Dr. Halliwell has previously worked with groups such as RMSSN, the Pollinator Hotshots, and other citizen science efforts. He will co-supervise the NPS Pollinator Hotshot project that started this fall. Welcome, Phil– we are delighted to have you on our team! Congratulations to our former Pollinator Hotshot (2020) Andy Rohlf on his transition to the Army National Guard, and his deployment to Kuwait in October. We wish you the best of luck on your next adventure!
Congratulations to our former Pollinator Hotshot (2020) Cristal Dominguez Vasquez, a senior fish, wildlife and conservation biology student in the Warner College of Natural Resources, who received a $500 prize for her second place poster submission at the MURALS (Multicultural Undergraduate Research Art and Leadership) Symposium at Colorado State University. Her project examined how the Soapstone bison have several intersectional stories through art.

Congratulations to our 2020-2021 Louis Stokes CO-WY Alliance for Minority Participation (LSAMP) student Daniel Dominguez for receiving the prestigious Marshall Scholarship as announced by the British government. This gives American students the opportunity to study at the United Kingdom’s top academic institutions. Daniel will attend Scotland’s University of Glasgow in September 2021 to pursue a master’s degree in sustainable water environments. After that, he will attend either the University of Oxford or the University of East Anglia in England for further study.
Just last week, Daniel also received a Graduate Research Fellowship Program (GRFP) award from the National Science Foundation, which provides three years of support for the graduate education of individuals who have demonstrated their potential for significant research achievements in STEM.
We are so proud of you, Daniel!
Happy 2021 to all! We’ve been buried in snow here in Fort Collins, but King Chunk (honorary lab member) is still just as eager to get outside! We’re anticipating more bug catching, new graduate students joining the lab, and COP26 in Glasgow, Scotland with the new year!
