<a href=\"http:\/\/warnercnr.colostate.edu\/~gwhite\/mark\/markhelp\/idx.htm\">Index<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;font-family: Arial, helvetica, sans-serif;font-size: medium\"><b>Young Survival from Marked Adults<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;font-family: Arial, helvetica, sans-serif;font-size: small\">The <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial, helvetica, sans-serif;font-size: small\"><a href=\"http:\/\/warnercnr.colostate.edu\/~gwhite\/mark\/markhelp\/pertinentliterature.htm\">Lukacs (2004)<\/a><\/span><span style=\"color: #0000ff;font-family: Arial, helvetica, sans-serif;font-size: small\"> Young Survival from Marked Adults <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial, helvetica, sans-serif;font-size: small\"><a href=\"http:\/\/warnercnr.colostate.edu\/~gwhite\/mark\/markhelp\/data_type.htm\">data type<\/a><\/span><span style=\"color: #0000ff;font-family: Arial, helvetica, sans-serif;font-size: small\"> provides estimates of the survival rate of young monitored by checking a marked adult.\u00a0 Typically, the adult is a female bird, and the number of chicks are counted on each visit.\u00a0 The model allows imperfect detection of chicks.\u00a0 One critical assumption of the model is that chicks are not adopted by the adult female, i.e., the actual brood size cannot increase, but can only decrease due to mortality of chicks.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;font-family: Arial, helvetica, sans-serif;font-size: small\">The <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial, helvetica, sans-serif;font-size: small\"><a href=\"http:\/\/warnercnr.colostate.edu\/~gwhite\/mark\/markhelp\/encounter_histories_file.htm\">encounter histories<\/a><\/span><span style=\"color: #0000ff;font-family: Arial, helvetica, sans-serif;font-size: small\"> for this data type consist of counts of chicks on each occasion.\u00a0 From 0 to 99 chicks can be counted, although the model does not produce precise estimates of survival for more than 5 or so chicks unless the chick detection rate is very close to 1.\u00a0 As an example, suppose the count of chicks for 6 occasions were 5, 4, 5, 3, 3, and 1.\u00a0 The encounter history would then be:<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #0000ff;font-family: Arial, helvetica, sans-serif;font-size: small\">050405030301\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 1;<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #0000ff;font-family: Arial, helvetica, sans-serif;font-size: small\">where only one group is observed.\u00a0 That is, the number of broods with this encounter history is 1.\u00a0 Dots can be used to designate a missing count, e.g.,<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #0000ff;font-family: Arial, helvetica, sans-serif;font-size: small\">050405..0301\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 1;<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #0000ff;font-family: Arial, helvetica, sans-serif;font-size: small\">would be used if the 4th count in the above example was missing.\u00a0 Dots can also be used at the start of the encounter history to indicate that the brood entered the study at some occasion after the first one.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;font-family: Arial, helvetica, sans-serif;font-size: small\">Parameters for the model are phi (apparent survivial) and p (probability of detection for a single chick).\u00a0 These parameters can be time specific, but the last phi and p estimates will be confounded, and only a product of these 2 parameters can be estimated.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;font-family: Arial, helvetica, sans-serif;font-size: small\">For the case of a single young, this model reduces to the regular Cormack-Jolly-Seber model.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Contents &#8211;
