Minerals and vegetation\/forage are the<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #3333ff\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 resources. Minerals are<\/span> <span style=\"color: #3333ff\">not renewable; vegetation is renewable. Perennial plants<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #3333ff\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 have many mechanisms to resist the impact of<\/span> <span style=\"color: #3333ff\">herbivory.<\/span><\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif\"><b>2.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Cattle raising in the Serengetti is a sustainable use of the natural vegetation; cattle raising in Colorado is a sustainable use of the natural vegetation. Discuss.<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif\"><b>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <span style=\"color: #3333ff\">What is your definition of sustainability? Is the issue sustainability of the<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #3333ff\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 vegetation\/ground cover? Lifestyle?<\/span> <span style=\"color: #3333ff\">Culture?\u00a0 Economical sustainability? Political<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #3333ff\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 sustainability? My answer in both instances is yes, but&#8212;-.<\/span><\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif\"><b>3.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The title of this course is Principles of Range Management. What is a principle?<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif\"><b>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <span style=\"color: #3333ff\">In my way of thinking principles are statements that can be used to explain a state<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #3333ff\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 (how things are) or predict<\/span> <span style=\"color: #3333ff\">a transition.\u00a0 Principles are based on facts. Facts are ideas<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #3333ff\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 accepted for face value based on the culture of<\/span> <span style=\"color: #3333ff\">individuals who accept the rules of<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #3333ff\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 evidence used to generate those facts. Generally, in the physical sciences, principles are based on<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #3333ff\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 axioms. we don&#8217;t want these to come back<br \/>\n* The problem is bio-diversity<\/b><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif\"><b>I see all of these as a part of some issue, but they tend to fall into the category of either symptoms, causes or solutions.<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif\"><b>What is the issue?<br \/>\n<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif\"><b>The issue is one of public perception.\u00a0 The public would like to \ufffdpreserve\ufffd the historical significance of the canyon.\u00a0 At the same time they want to expunge the impact of recent agricultural and ranching activities, but not forget the tradition.<\/b><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif\"><b>The issue is making the cultural and intrinsic values and economic benefits of resources in the area available to future generations without withdrawing public access.<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif\"><b>The issue is maintenance of the cultural and ecological integrity of the canyon.\u00a0 There are no shortage of people with suggestions of how the canyon should \ufffdbe restored.\ufffd<\/b><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif\"><b>Suggested problems might be:<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif\"><b>* Unacceptable fire risk in many parts of the canyon<br \/>\n* Ecological status is different from societal expectations, i.e., desired future conditions.<br \/>\n* Bare soil is subject to wind and water erosion<br \/>\n* The cultural record is at risk of being removed from the area or defaced<br \/>\n* Other?<br \/>\n<\/b><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif\"><b>Even this list is subject to my personal biases.\u00a0 Different stakeholders in the PWC may have different needs.\u00a0 Yet, you can&#8217;t &#8220;fix&#8221; a non-problem.\u00a0 It is important to distinguish between problems and issues; problems and symptoms; problems and solutions.\u00a0 Goals should not be confused with objectives.\u00a0 At this point we are going to leave this scenario open.<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif\"><b>One test of how well you have stated the problem is how difficult it is to write an action objective to address the problem.\u00a0 Then second test is to ask yourself, \ufffdif we find a way to solve this problem, will that solution materially address the issue and help us meet the goal?\ufffd<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif\"><b>In the real world, we would begin to evaluate how contentious the issues are and how important the problems are to various stakeholders groups.\u00a0 That would determine the model we would use to analyze and synthesize all the problems and prepare a menu of decision alternatives that would meet stakeholder needs.\u00a0 The key is analysis and synthesis.\u00a0 We will address that later.\u00a0 The analyses and synthesis will help determine the goal.\u00a0 Will your goal be to find cause?\u00a0 find a solution?\u00a0 anticipate the impact of management action?<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif\"><b>One last reminder.\u00a0 Management never ends, it is a process.\u00a0 We always deal with an uncertain environment and a receding planning horizon.<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>RS300 Feedback on Quiz 08-23-99 1.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 I was browsing a freshman textbook the other day and ran across the statement: &#8220;Mining and grazing are non-renewable resources.&#8221;
