We partnered with Micah Nelson, a teacher at University Hill Elementary School (Boulder, CO) to develop materials to guide three 5th-grade level lessons on healthy rivers. These lessons incorporate ecology, geology, and chemistry concepts to teach students what makes a healthy river. These lessons can be used independently or in conjunction.
The first lesson focuses on wood in rivers and public perception of how wood influences streams: Healthy Rivers — Wood
The second lesson focuses on water quality, specifically how streams with good water quality can vary widely in terms of how they look: Healthy Rivers — Water Quality
The final lesson focuses on river restoration and how people try to improve riverine ecology and water quality: Healthy Rivers — River Restoration
