I work on a range of ecosystem types, including peatlands, rivers and their floodplains, marshes and meadows, and topics and questions including ecosystem sustainability, regional water budgets, restoration, monitoring and management. The overall goal of my research is to link hydrologic regimes to wetland and riparian vegetation, and ecological processes including soil formation. I also work to assess how changes in climate or direct human manipulation of water availability could influence ecosystems.
I have research programs on the following topics:
Peatland ecology in the mountain regions
Riparian ecology in the western US
Marshes and other wetlands
Restoration ecology
Ecosystem Monitoring
Water budgets and water use in natural and urban landscapes
