Grad application FAQ
How qualified am I?
The attributes listed on the cover page of this web section (Join the Lab) are the most important qualifications to working in this lab. However, there are additional skillsets that you may possess that will make your application more competitive, which you may wish to discuss in your interview or personal statement. These are described here. Note that expectations for experiences are lower for master’s applications than PhD applications.
This survey is meant to be self-reflective, and aid in your preparation for applying to and interviewing with the lab. Please do NOT send the results of this survey to Dr. LoTemplio, as this is not a part of the application process
Do you require the GRE?
No. There is little evidence supporting a correlation between graduate school success and GRE scores, and it can often represent a significant barrier for lower-income students. (However NOTE: if you are applying to a program other than HDNR, it might be required. Just know I place little weight on it).
Can you review my application materials before I turn them in?
Unfortunately, no member from the RAAIN lab is able to review your application materials before you turn them in. This is to ensure that the application process is fair, as we are unable to review each student’s application.
How can I make my application more competitive?
Aside from reading & following the process listed above, if you chose to apply, you can increase the competitiveness of your application by:
1. Reading our papers.
2. Brainstorming ideas on how to follow up on our previous work or address our current research questions.
3. Discussing your related interests and ideas in your statement of purpose, and in your first contact email to Dr. LoTemplio.
4. Ensuring that you have thoroughly reviewed your application materials and received feedback on them from trusted mentors before submitting.
5. Do not, under any circumstance, use AI to generate any of your application materials, including your introductory email. We will find it and catch it and your application will not be considered.
6. Downloading R (it’s free) and PsychoPy (also free) and playing around with it a bit, using YouTube to teach yourself some very basic skills.
