F 230 – Forestry Field Measurements

Course Description

This course is required in all Forestry concentrations of the Forest and Rangeland Stewardship degrees that I co-teach during the summer term. This is an intensive 2 week course that meets all day while blending lectures, field demonstrations, and experiential learning exercises. Student develop skills related to land navigation, tree measurements, fixed area plots, variable radius plots, and fuels measurements. In each of these activities, students sharpen their quantitative and critical thinking skills by summarizing the data they collection and reflecting on the data collection process. Throughout the course students blend these skills in a series of exercises that culminated with them planning, executing, and reporting on a forest inventory.
