Gary C. White

Retirement.

On June 30, 2007, I was emancipated from Colorado State University. This can be interpreted as meaning I plan to stay active professionally, but not take additional graduate students, and not continue serving on Faculty Council and the CSU ACUC. Currently, I’m still serving on graduate committees at Colorado State, consulting on various mark-encounter projects, conducting workshops on Program MARK, and traveling in our satellite-dish equipped Bigfoot motor home.

Research Interests.

Quantitative ecology, estimation of population parameters, compensatory mortality in mule deer populations, development of Program MARK.

Courses Taught.

I formally taught 2 graduate courses closely related to my research interests, FW662 Population Dynamics and FW 663 Analysis of Vertebrate Populations (with Paul F. Doherty, Jr.). In addition, I taught FW696, a graduate student orientation course each fall.

Recent past Ph. D. and M. S. student projects were:

bullet determining density-dependence in population growth (Tanya Shenk),
bullet determining strategies for when to winter feed mule deer (Bruce Lubow),
bullet evaluating the effects of archery season on elk movements (Mary Conner),
bullet movements of Preble’s meadow jumping mouse, an endangered species (Arti Dharman),
bullet further evaluation of the effects of archery season on elk movements (Mark Post Vieira),
bullet population dynamics of mountain plover (Stephen J. Dinsmore),
bullet evaluating the impact of grazing on greater prairie chicken populations on the Valentine National Wildlife Refuge, Nebraska (Bridgette Flanders),
bullet estimating the population size of sage grouse in Middle Park, Colorado (Daniel Walsh),
bullet evaluating the effects on lesser prairie chicken populations of inter-seeding Conservation Reserve Program lands with native forbs in western Kansas (Tamara Fields),
bullet development of a population model of North Park Greater Sage-grouse populations (Kristen Strohm),
bullet effects of controlled burns on wildlife populations (Sarah J. Converse),
bullet synthesizing mark-recapture and harvest models to estimate demographic parameters (Paul Conn),
bullet estimation of mountain sheep populations in Rocky Mountain National Park (Brett McClintock),
bullet mule deer response to enhanced nutrition (Chad Bishop),
bullet improving efficiency of quadrat sampling to estimate elk populations (Greg Davidson), and
bullet habitat effects on snow shoe hare population dynamics (Jacob Ivan).

Software.

For a list of software that I have developed and how to obtain the code, see obtaining software. Most of my recent effort has been on the development of Program MARK.
